Scenic Byways are public roads that have been recognized as having outstanding scenic, historic, cultural, natural, recreational, and/or archaeological qualities. Scenic Byways may be designated by the state in which they are located or by the National Scenic Byways Program of the Federal Highway Administration.
There are several Scenic Byways in the AVCOG region, including the Grafton Notch Scenic Byway (Route 26 from Newry to Upton), the Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway (Route 4 from Sandy River Plantation to Rangeley and Route 17 from Township E to Rangeley), and the Route 27 Scenic Byway (Kingfield to Coburn Gore). The Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway is one of four nationally-designated Scenic Byways in Maine.
